Event Recap: Bruning Green History Walk

On April 13th, the North Loop Neighborhood Association (NLNA) History Subcommittee hosted a history walk showcasing the rich and storied history of Bruning Green, our small-but-mighty neighborhood green space at the corner of 52nd and Bruning.

The day kicked off with a free community yoga class hosted by North Loop business Flow Yoga. Then, a master horticulturalist with the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center led a tree walk, telling neighbors about the various species of trees found in the Green. Next, History Subcommittee Co-Chair Jan Seward led the group in an oral history of the land, walking neighbors through the origins and establishment of Bruning Green as a neighbor-maintained green space, detailing the numerous beautification projects undertaken in the Green, and showcasing our current maintenance efforts. Finally, neighbors enjoyed a pizza picnic with pies generously donated by NLNA Business Member Homeslice Pizza.

Our other History Committee Co-Chair, Bobby Sledge, has compiled the presentation information here: Bruning Green Presentation

Special thanks to those neighbors (especially Cindy Black) who preserved the content that made this history walk possible. And in that spirit, we’d also like to see your ‘historic’ photos of the neighborhood.

Call For Old Photos: email northloophood@gmail.com with any copies of old neighborhood photos you’d like to share and perhaps see uploaded on our Neighborhood History page. By ‘historic’, you can be the judge, but we’d especially any old prints that might get lost; we can scan physical copies for you, if you haven’t already.

Thanks again to all who made our Bruning Green history walk successful: neighbors, organizers, business donors, and other volunteers! Stay tuned for the next history walk to be announced.
